One of Maryland’s Most Unique Trophy Hunts

There is nothing quite like hunting a Sika stag. Known as the “Swamp Ghost,” these elusive animals inhabit some of the most remote marsh and swamp country on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Their secretive nature, incredible senses, and ability to disappear into thick cover make successfully harvesting a mature stag an experience hunters don’t soon forget.

At Rivers Edge Outdoors, our trophy Sika hunts take place on carefully managed private properties with exceptional Sika habitat. Through scouting, trail cameras, habitat knowledge, strategically maintained hunting locations, and an evolving management program, we work throughout the year to understand how these animals are using our properties and give our hunters the best opportunity possible.

A Management Program Built Around the Sika Herd

Since taking over the family business, we’ve placed a strong emphasis on developing and improving our Sika deer management program. Our strategy isn’t simply about harvesting animals—it’s about maintaining properties that hold Sika, protecting the females that are so important to the herd, and managing hunting pressure to create quality opportunities year after year.

Hinds are strictly protected on our properties. We often refer to them as our “live decoys.” Where the hinds are, the stags will eventually want to be, particularly as breeding activity increases.

That philosophy has become an important part of how we manage and hunt our Sika properties.

Your Trophy Is Your Choice

Unlike our whitetail management program, we do not have a minimum antler restriction for Sika stags.

For one hunter, success may mean waiting for an exceptional mature 6- or 7-point stag. For another, taking their first Sika spike may represent the hunt of a lifetime. As long as the animal is positively identified as a stag, the decision is yours.

Our guides can help you understand what you’re seeing and what opportunities may exist, but we believe your trophy should ultimately be defined by your goals—not ours.

The Swamp Is Part of the Experience

Sika country can be challenging. Hunters should be prepared for wet ground, marshes, mud, uneven terrain, and walks through remote areas to reach hunting locations. A good pair of waterproof boots and a walking stick can quickly become two of the most appreciated pieces of equipment you bring.

Our guides know these properties intimately and work hard behind the scenes to maintain access, monitor Sika activity, and prepare hunting locations. That can mean everything from maintaining trails and checking cameras to hauling heavy bags of corn long distances through swamp terrain.

When it’s time to hunt, we’ll coordinate your hunting location and help get you where you need to be while keeping disturbance to the property as low as possible.

Three Days to Hunt the Swamp Ghost

Our trophy Sika hunt is offered as a 3-day package with lodging included. Keeping hunters together allows our guides to coordinate each day’s strategy, respond to changing conditions and Sika movement, and handle transportation to our remote hunting properties.

Because parking is extremely limited at the Sika properties, hunters travel to and from the hunting areas with their guides rather than taking individual vehicles onto the farms.

Our Sika program has historically produced an exceptionally high success rate, but—as with every wild hunt—we never guarantee a harvest. Following your guide’s instructions, controlling scent and movement, remaining patient, and making the most of the opportunities presented all play an important role in success.

Make Your Shot Count

Every Sika must be positively identified as a stag before the shot is taken. Hinds may not be harvested.

Hunters are expected to take responsible shots within their abilities, and a wounded Sika is considered a harvested animal, whether or not it is ultimately recovered. If you take a shot, contact your guide and follow their instructions before leaving your hunting location or attempting to track the animal.

The swamp can make recovery particularly challenging, which makes shot placement and patience after the shot especially important.

Experience the Rivers Edge Sika Hunt

Sika hunting combines everything that makes hunting memorable—the anticipation, the challenge, the habitat, the sounds of the marsh, and the possibility that an animal you’ve been waiting hours to see can suddenly appear from seemingly nowhere.

Our management program, outstanding habitat, experienced guides, and knowledge of these properties have helped make Sika one of the hunts we’re most excited about at Rivers Edge Outdoors.

Whether your goal is an epic trophy stag or your first Sika, we’ll put the preparation, property knowledge, and hard work behind giving you the best opportunity to make it happen.
