The Art of Hunting the Eastern Gobbler
Few hunts demand the patience, adaptability, and interaction of hunting an Eastern wild turkey. These birds can answer every call and never take another step—or go silent and suddenly appear exactly where you hoped they would. Knowing how to read that behavior is where an experienced turkey guide can make all the difference.
At Rivers Edge Outdoors, turkey hunting is one of our most hands-on guided experiences. John has more than 40 years of turkey hunting and guiding experience, developing an exceptional understanding of how Eastern gobblers respond throughout the season. It’s not simply knowing how to call—it’s knowing which call to make, how to answer a bird, when to get aggressive, when to soften the calling, when to move, and sometimes when to say absolutely nothing.
A Truly Guided Hunt
Our guides are actively hunting alongside you. Depending on what the bird is telling us, a morning may involve setting decoys and patiently working a gobbler—or quickly changing strategies, repositioning, stalking, and going run-and-gun to get into the right position.
Every bird is different. Terrain, weather, breeding activity, hunting pressure, and how a gobbler responds all influence the next move. Our guides continually adjust the strategy rather than relying on one approach.
Calling Makes the Difference
Calling an Eastern gobbler takes more than making the right sound. It’s knowing how to have a conversation with the bird.
Our guides listen to how a gobbler answers, how quickly he responds, whether he’s moving, and how his behavior changes throughout the encounter. Sometimes the right response is aggressive calling. Sometimes it’s a few soft notes. And sometimes the best call you can make is putting the call down altogether.
Those decisions come from decades spent in the turkey woods.

Turkey hunting is intimate by nature, which is why we keep these hunts personal with just one to two hunters per guide. This allows the guide to work closely with each hunter, adapt quickly as the hunt develops, and provide the hands-on experience that makes guided turkey hunting so exciting.
New turkey hunters are welcome as well. Our guides are happy to help you understand the calling, setup, movement, and strategy happening throughout the hunt—not simply put you in the woods and hope a gobbler walks by.
